Portuguese Weekend Course
A1A1 – Beginner
For participants with no or very little knowledge of Portuguese
This course introduces you to the fundamentals of Portuguese, with a focus on Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation and key differences from European Portuguese. You will learn basic greetings, self-introduction, and how to handle simple everyday situations. The course covers essential vocabulary, present tense conjugation, and the characteristic nasal sounds of Portuguese.
What you will learn:
- Understand the key pronunciation differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese
- Master Portuguese nasal vowels, diphthongs, and basic intonation patterns
- Introduce yourself, greet others, and handle simple social interactions
- Use present tense verbs and basic sentence structures including gender and articles
- Navigate everyday situations such as ordering food, shopping, and asking for directions

A2A2 – Elementary
For participants with basic knowledge of Portuguese who can manage simple everyday conversations
Building on your basics, this course develops your ability to communicate in a wider range of situations. You will learn to talk about past events using the pretérito perfeito, describe people and places, and write short messages. The course also introduces common expressions and cultural aspects of Brazil and Portugal.
What you will learn:
- Narrate past events and experiences using the pretérito perfeito and imperfeito
- Describe people, places, and daily routines with expanded vocabulary
- Write short personal messages, informal emails, and simple descriptions
- Handle practical situations such as booking accommodation and using public transport
- Understand the gist of simple conversations and short texts on familiar topics
Portuguese Weekend Course
B1B1 – Intermediate
For participants who can communicate in everyday situations and want to develop greater fluency and range
At this level, you will learn to express opinions, discuss familiar topics, and deal with most situations encountered while travelling in Portuguese-speaking countries. The course introduces the subjunctive mood, more complex sentence structures, and strategies for understanding authentic Portuguese media. Cultural topics from Brazil, Portugal, and lusophone Africa are also explored.
What you will learn:
- Express and defend opinions on topics such as culture, society, and current events
- Use the conjuntivo (subjunctive) in common contexts including wishes and uncertainty
- Understand the main points of news programmes, podcasts, and newspaper articles
