Why a Japanese intensive course?
In the intensive course you immerse yourself in the language: regular lessons on several days a week lead to fast, tangible progress – ideal if you want to build up your Japanese quickly for work, university or time abroad. In small groups of 4 to 12 participants you get plenty of speaking time, practise realistic everyday situations and are guided step by step to the next level by native-speaking teachers.
Japanese Intensive Course for Beginners and Advanced Learners
Our Japanese courses guide you from your very first strokes of the Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries all the way to a confident command of the honorific language Keigo. Step by step you build up your Kanji, the SOV sentence structure typical of Japanese and a secure grasp of the particles は, を, が and の. Whatever your level from A1 to C2, you will find the right starting point.
Japanese Intensive Course
A1A1 – Beginner
For complete beginners with no prior knowledge who want to learn Japanese from scratch and encounter the Japanese writing systems for the first time.
This course introduces you to the two syllabaries Hiragana and Katakana and teaches the polite です/ます form along with the essential particles (は, を, が). You will get to know the SOV word order (subject–object–verb) typical of Japanese and introduce yourself in simple sentences. First Kanji for numbers and everyday terms, together with basic counters, round off your start.
What you will learn:
- Read and write the Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries
- Introduce yourself using the polite です/ます form and ask simple questions
- Use the core particles は, を and が correctly within the SOV sentence structure
- Apply numbers and the most important counters (つ, 人, 円)
- Recognise first Kanji for numbers, weekdays and everyday terms

A2A2 – Elementary
For learners who have mastered Hiragana and Katakana and want to expand their vocabulary and first Kanji for everyday situations.
Building on the です/ます form, you learn the versatile て-form, which lets you make requests (てください) and link actions together. You form the past tense (ました/でした) and master the conjugation of both い- and な-adjectives. Further particles such as に, で, へ and と broaden your expression, while your active Kanji vocabulary grows to several hundred characters.
What you will learn:
- Form the て-form and use it for requests (てください) and linked actions
- Use the past-tense forms ました and でした confidently
- Conjugate い-adjectives and な-adjectives correctly
- Employ the location particles に and で and the direction particle へ
- Read around 300 Kanji for everyday situations such as shopping and directions

B1B1 – Intermediate
For learners with a solid foundation who want to move from polite forms to natural colloquial speech and build more complex sentences.
You switch between the polite です/ます form and the plain form (普通形) of everyday speech and learn to express intentions and opinions with と思う. Conditional forms (と, ば, たら, なら), the potential form (可能形) and the verbs of giving and receiving (あげる, くれる, もらう) broaden your range of expression. You distinguish transitive and intransitive verb pairs (自動詞/他動詞) and master around 650 Kanji.
What you will learn:
- Switch between the polite です/ます form and the plain form (普通形)
- Form conditional sentences with と, ば, たら and なら
- Use the potential form (可能形) for abilities and possibilities
- Express giving and receiving correctly with あげる, くれる and もらう
- Distinguish transitive and intransitive verb pairs (自動詞/他動詞)

For advanced learners who want to discuss demanding topics and dive into the honorific language Keigo for the first time.
You enter the honorific language Keigo and distinguish between respectful (尊敬語) and humble (謙譲語) expressions. Passive (受身) and causative (使役) forms as well as complex relative clauses considerably expand your sentence structure. You grasp the subtle nuances between the particles は and が, discuss abstract topics and master around 1000 Kanji.
What you will learn:
- Distinguish and apply respectful language (尊敬語) and humble language (謙譲語)
- Form passive (受身) and causative (使役) constructions
- Build complex relative clauses in front of nouns correctly
- Handle the nuances between the particles は and が confidently
- Read around 1000 Kanji in abstract and opinion-based texts

For very advanced learners who want to use Japanese precisely and in a stylistically appropriate way in professional and academic contexts.
You master the complete honorific language Keigo, including the business Japanese (ビジネス敬語) common in the corporate world, and switch confidently between spoken and written language (書き言葉). Idiomatic expressions (慣用句), four-character compounds (四字熟語) and the rich onomatopoeia (擬音語/擬態語) add nuance to your expression. You read newspapers and literature and command around 1500 to 2000 Kanji.
What you will learn:
- Use business Keigo (ビジネス敬語) confidently in emails and meetings
- Switch deliberately between spoken and written language (話し言葉/書き言葉)
- Use idiomatic expressions (慣用句) and four-character compounds (四字熟語)
- Employ onomatopoeia (擬音語/擬態語) with nuance
- Read around 2000 Kanji fluently in newspapers and specialist texts

C2C2 – Mastery
For learners at the highest level who want to command Japanese in a near-native fashion across all registers and situations.
You use every register of Japanese effortlessly – from formal Keigo through literary language to regional dialects (方言). You grasp and deploy subtle nuances, wordplay, humour and cultural allusions with confidence. The complete set of Jōyō Kanji (常用漢字) and classical language elements are actively at your disposal, enabling you to understand and compose demanding literary and specialist texts.
What you will learn:
- Move confidently between all registers from formal Keigo to dialects (方言)
- Understand and deploy subtle nuances, wordplay and cultural allusions
- Actively use the full set of Jōyō Kanji (常用漢字, around 2136 characters)
- Recognise and interpret classical and literary language elements
- Compose demanding literary and specialist texts in an appropriate style

No. Depending on demand, the intensive course is offered at all levels from A1 to C2. Our free online placement test helps us find the right level for you.
A course block usually runs for 4 weeks with around 12 hours of lessons per week. We also recommend planning some time for revision and exercises.
