Swedish Weekend Course
A1A1 – Beginner
For participants with no or very little knowledge of Swedish
This course introduces you to the basics of Swedish from the very beginning. You will learn the Swedish alphabet including the special letters Å, Ä and Ö, the Swedish word stress and the two grammatical genders (en/ett). By the end of the course you can introduce yourself, handle simple everyday conversations and read short texts.
What you will learn:
- Read, write and pronounce the Swedish alphabet including Å, Ä and Ö
- Introduce yourself, greet others and exchange basic personal information (hej, tack, varsågod)
- Recognise Swedish word stress and the typical pitch-accent intonation
- Use the two grammatical genders (en-words / ett-words) and definite/indefinite forms
- Cope in cafés, shops or when asking for directions in Swedish

A2A2 – Elementary
For participants with basic Swedish skills who can understand and form simple sentences
You build on your basic knowledge and learn to talk about past events and future plans. The course deepens your knowledge of the Swedish verb groups (1, 2a, 2b, 3 and irregular verbs), plural formation and typical conversational situations. You practise navigating everyday Swedish life with greater confidence.
What you will learn:
- Talk about past experiences using the past tense (åt, gick) and the perfect (har gått)
- Conjugate the four Swedish verb groups confidently
- Apply the five plural patterns and definite/indefinite forms correctly
- Understand and give directions (höger, vänster, rakt fram)
- Talk about plans and intentions using ska and kommer att

B1B1 – Intermediate
For participants who can already manage familiar everyday situations in Swedish
You learn to express opinions, discuss familiar topics and write coherent texts. The course covers V2 word order in main clauses and the deviating subordinate-clause word order with inte, the s-passive and reflexive verbs. You understand the main points of Swedish media and take an active part in conversations.
What you will learn:
- Reliably distinguish V2 word order in main clauses from subordinate-clause word order
- Use the s-passive and the bli-passive accurately
- Apply reflexive verbs and reflexive pronouns (sig, sin/sitt/sina) correctly
- Understand the gist of Swedish news (e.g. SVT Nyheter)
- Write coherent texts about personal experiences and familiar topics

B2B2 – Upper Intermediate
For participants who already express themselves fluently in most everyday situations in Swedish
You deepen your language skills and learn to present complex ideas and argue with nuance. The course focuses on stylistic subtleties, more formal usage and Swedish cultural concepts (lagom, allemansrätten, fika). You work with demanding texts and authentic media.
What you will learn:
- Present complex arguments in a structured way and defend them in discussions
- Use subjunctive equivalents (skulle + infinitive) and modal verbs with nuance
- Analyse demanding texts (DN, SvD) and literary excerpts
- Distinguish stylistic differences between formal and informal Swedish
- Understand Swedish films and radio (Sveriges Radio) without subtitles

For participants with strong Swedish skills who want to bring their proficiency to a professional and academic level
You refine your Swedish for demanding professional and academic contexts. The course covers complex syntax, participial constructions, idiomatic expressions and regional varieties (rikssvenska, finlandssvenska). You learn to hold your own in expert discussions with confidence.
What you will learn:
- Deliver professional presentations and conduct negotiations confidently in Swedish
- Use idiomatic expressions and elevated register naturally
- Recognise implicit meaning, irony and cultural allusions
- Write academic and subject-specific texts at a high linguistic level
- Distinguish regional varieties (rikssvenska vs. finlandssvenska) by ear

For participants who wish to reach near-native Swedish proficiency and master the finest nuances of the language
At this level you perfect your command of Swedish down to the subtlest nuances. You engage with demanding Swedish literature (Strindberg, Lindgren, Tranströmer) as well as modern voices (Larsson, Khemiri), refine your personal style and move effortlessly between different registers.
What you will learn:
- Effortlessly grasp the finest nuances, wordplay and cultural allusions
- Switch confidently between formal, literary and colloquial Swedish
- Produce demanding academic and journalistic texts at a near-native level
- Take part spontaneously and eloquently in complex debates without searching for words
- Analyse Swedish literature from Strindberg to Tranströmer in its stylistic and cultural depth
