The weekend course concentrates the lessons on Saturday: you learn Japanese in compact sessions without the course clashing with work, university or family during the week. In small groups of 4 to 12 participants there is still plenty of time for active speaking – and over eight weeks you build up your level in a structured, lasting way.

Come to us at the Sprachinstitut Berlin – the professional language school with heart in Berlin-Mitte. We offer high-quality Japanese weekend courses at affordable prices. The course takes place every Saturday over 8 weeks with a total of 32 teaching units – perfect for learning Japanese on weekends without disrupting your daily routine. From the very first lesson you will learn the Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries along with your first polite expressions. Japanese Weekend Course
A1A1 – Beginner
For participants with no or very little knowledge of Japanese
This course introduces you to the fundamentals of the Japanese language from the very beginning. You will learn to read and write both syllabaries, Hiragana and Katakana, master the polite です/ます form, and use the essential particles は, を, and が. By the end, you can introduce yourself and handle simple everyday situations in Japanese.
What you will learn:
- Read and write the Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries
- Introduce yourself and exchange greetings politely using the です/ます form
- Use the basic particles は, を, が, and の correctly
- Understand and state numbers, times, and prices
- Handle simple conversations when shopping and in restaurants

A2A2 – Elementary
For participants with basic knowledge of Japanese who can handle simple everyday situations
Building on your foundation, you will learn to talk about the past and describe routines. The course covers the て-form, the past tense (〜ました), and the conjugation of i- and na-adjectives. You will also learn your first roughly 100 Kanji and expand your everyday vocabulary.
What you will learn:
- Form the て-form and use it for requests and continuous actions
- Talk about past events using the 〜ました/〜でした forms
- Conjugate and compare i- and na-adjectives correctly
- Read and recognise your first roughly 100 Kanji in context
- Describe your daily routine and personal preferences

B1B1 – Intermediate
For participants who can already communicate in everyday situations in Japanese
At this level you will learn the plain form (普通形) for casual conversation, conditional sentences (〜たら, 〜ば), and the potential form. The course expands your Kanji to around 300 characters and introduces the distinction between polite and casual registers.
What you will learn:
- Switch confidently between the polite (です/ます) and plain (普通形) forms
- Form and use conditional sentences with 〜たら and 〜ば
- Use the potential form to express ability
- Express giving and receiving with あげる・もらう・くれる
- Read around 300 Kanji and understand simple authentic texts

B2B2 – Upper Intermediate
For participants who can already express themselves fluently in most situations in Japanese
You will deepen your skills and get to know Japanese honorific language, Keigo (尊敬語 and 謙譲語). The course covers passive and causative forms, more complex sentence structures, and expands your Kanji to around 1000 characters. You will practise taking part in discussions and understanding more demanding texts.
What you will learn:
- Distinguish and apply respectful (尊敬語) and humble (謙譲語) language
- Form passive and causative constructions correctly
- Build complex sentences with multiple subordinate clauses
- Read around 1000 Kanji and grasp the gist of newspaper articles
- Take an active part in discussions on familiar topics

For participants with advanced Japanese who want to raise their language to a professional and academic level
This advanced course perfects your language use for demanding professional and academic contexts. It deepens Keigo usage in business, covers stylistic nuance and idiomatic expressions, and expands your vocabulary towards the roughly 2000 Jōyō Kanji. You will learn to grasp implicit meaning and produce nuanced texts.
What you will learn:
- Use Keigo confidently in business and negotiation situations
- Recognise implicit meaning and cultural allusions in texts
- Use idiomatic expressions and four-character compounds (四字熟語)
- Master most of the roughly 2000 Jōyō Kanji
- Write academic and specialised texts to a high standard

For participants who want to reach a near-native level of Japanese and master the finest linguistic nuances
At this level you refine your command of Japanese down to the subtlest nuances. You will work with demanding Japanese literature, grasp classical and stylistic features, and move effortlessly between all registers – from colloquial speech to highly formal Keigo.
What you will learn:
- Recognise subtle distinctions of meaning and stylistic nuance effortlessly
- Move confidently between all registers, from colloquial speech to formal Keigo
- Write demanding academic and literary texts at a native-like level
- Take part spontaneously and eloquently in complex debates
- Analyse Japanese literature in its cultural and stylistic depth
